Hello, I am looking for suggestions to help my son who has ADHD build better social skills, temperment, self esteem, and to help me cope when he gets too wild to handle. I find myself getting very short tempered when he starts to get out of control. I could use some helpful advice and I am new to this forum. I want to better equip my son with lifelong skills that will benefit him at school, home and in life. He is 9 yrs old and I feel that if I get a grip and give him these skills and tools he can go far. Any and all suggestions will be very appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Rose,
Having worked in the mental health field for several years, I can appreciate your concern and frustration. Dependent of the severity of the situation, meds I have found are at best a temporary fix. Diet has proven to have a great affect on moods and emotions. Also I have worked with kids where daily exercise is essential. And most important of all is the fact that you are the parent and in control regardless of the behavior. One thing to note, when implementing any new behavior strategies, expect the behavior to get worse at first. This is a good thing, because you have your child's attention, and he is resisting the changes. This is where you have to stay strong and consistent in order to see the desired improvements in behaviors. Check out my blog for a few ideas, and on one of the prior posts there is a link for a free email series on managing different behavior. All the best to you, Joseph |

Hi Rose,
I have sepnt 10 years now researching and helping families with ADHD with natural methods which are completely safe and simple. One of the first steps is to work with the emotional state and for this we work with Bach Flower Remedies which represent a complete emotional management system. this helps break down the dynamic between the two of you.
These are available from most good health shops and chemists and I would be happy to help you work out which ones you need. For immediate help with stress you can access one freely as a download sound frequency
If you would like more info on this please let me know
There are other things which are natural approaches that you can introduce with your son that can help - as everyone who has ADHD is different, it has to be an individual approach

Hi Rose!
Hope this might help
Providing Regulation and Discipline
In providing it to your child always remain calm, state the breach of the rule, and avoid arguing with the children. Have pre-established consequences for misbehavior and oversee consequences right away, and monitor suitable behavior frequently.
Providing Encouragement
To establish a good temper and self-esteem, reward more than you punish, in order to build self-esteem. And don’t forget to always praise right away any and all good behavior and performance that your child did. If the reward doesn’t work, change rewards if they are not effective in motivating behavioral change.
