NARSAD is an organization which was formed from four major citizens' groups (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, National Mental Health Association, National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association and the Schizophrenia Research Foundation) in 1986. NARSAD raises and distributes funds for scientific research into the causes, cures and treatments, and prevention of severe mental illness, primarily schizophrenia and depression. NARSAD has awarded $68 million to fund 1,758 grants to 913 scientists in 131 universities and medical research institutions.
